LOP BURI : Robbers have cut off and stolen the heads of six
Buddha images more than three centuries old from a temple in Lop Buri's Muang district,
The oldest of the six Buddha images was believed to have been
shaped and placed at Wat Luang Thai Talad in 1683, according
to Pol Lt Col Arongdet Sa-ardbua, who is heading the investigation into the thefts.
All of the images were carved between the late Ayutthaya period and the early
Rattanakosin period, Pol Lt Col Arongdet said.
Phra Samu Iamchanthasaro, the temple abbot, said the unusually
loud sound of a dog barking woke him at about 2am yesterday.
When he got up to see what was happening he found the front gate of
the temple's ubosot open and the six images missing their heads.
Phra Samu said thieves had tried four times before to break into the temple hall,
presumably to steal the Buddha image heads.
The monk believed someone had commissioned the theft of the six artifacts.
Villagers living near the temple were shocked when they heard about the theft and placed a curse on the thieves.
Local residents had worshipped the images for generations and the theft had hit them hard, police said.
