BANGKOK, Jan 21 -- Over 2 million methamphetamine pills, 30 kg of crystal metaphetamine or ice, and 20 kg of heroin worth billions of baht found during police search of a rented house in Pathum Thani.

The search came after Highway Police tried to arrest a suspected drug dealer on Friday at Phra-in Racha sluice gate in Khlong Raphipat in Bang Pa-in district of Ayutthaya but during the getaway the suspect's sedan lost control and fell into a canal between the motorway. Officers of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau escort the arrested army major to an interrogation room.

Maj Piyanat Ketchamras, of the Engineer Battalion of the Third Army, was yesterday taken by helicopter from a military camp in Phitsanulok's Muang district to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau in Bangkok.

The Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Maj Piyanat after he was implicated by a civilian drug suspect.

The court also approved an arrest warrant for Sgt Maj Weenas Srijai.

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said the military will not protect officers with suspected links to drugs and they must be subjected to legal proceedings.

"The military will not keep them and they must face prosecution," he said, adding the army will also set up a committee to investigate the issue.

On Wednesday, police arrested Niphon Kanchat who allegedly admitted to owning 3.8 million speed pills and 71kg of crystal methamphetamine worth more than 1 billion baht.

The drugs were earlier found at his girlfriend's house in Summakorn housing estate on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road. Police said Mr Niphon named Maj Piyanat as a player in a drug trafficking network.

A fake Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) ID with Mr Niphon's picture on it was found in a van parked at the house used to store the drugs.

It is believed he used the ID to avoid suspicion from the authorities.

Isoc spokesman Dithaporn Sasamit previously said the command had evidence that a retired officer may have made the fake IDs for a fee.

In Lampang, meanwhile, a policeman has been was arrested for selling drugs.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somboon Wong-od, attached to Hang Chat district police station, was arrested near a market in Muang district for selling methamphetamine pills.

He was allegedly delivering the drugs to police informants.

Police officers searched his house and seized his land title deeds, his car and cash.
