Nine bombing and shooting incidents rattled five districts in Pattani province late on Wednesday night. There were no reports of injuries.
Pattani police chief Maj Gen Phichet Pitisetthaphan yesterday morning led a team of police, including a bomb disposal squad and forensic officers, to inspect nine spots in Pattani following the attacks.
Maj Gen Phichet said three bombs exploded in Muang district while three more exploded in Yarang district. Another bomb went off in Yaring district.
In Nong Chik district, a group of militants fired assault rifles at a military outpost.
In Panare district, assailants fired three grenades at three different spots.
The attacks took place between 10pm and 10.30pm on Wednesday night.
The bombs were home-made devices were assembled in metal boxes weighing about 2kg and detonated by timers,.
The three bombs in Muang district were planted in three state agency offices.
The first explosion took place in a second-floor toilet of the Education Division of Pattani's Muang municipality, off Decha Road.
The second bomb exploded in a toilet of the Pattani branch of CAT Telecom Plc on Phiphit Road.
The third device exploded in the compound of Pattani Labour Development Centre in tambon Rusamilae.
In Yarang district, the first bomb went off in a rubbish bin in front of Yarang post office.
However, the explosion failed to cause any damage to the post office's property, police said.
The second bomb exploded near a fence behind the office of Yarang Highway District.
The third bomb in Yarang exploded in a TOT office compound.
The bomb destroyed the office building, causing an estimated 5 million baht in damage. The explosion also caused the failure of all fixed line telephones in Yarang district, which have yet to be repaired.
In Yaring district, a bomb also went off behind the post office.
The explosion caused damage to the building.
Meanwhile, in Nong Chik district, a group of assailants ambushed an outpost for military officers in the compound of Ban Don Rak School off Khok Pho-Pattani 42 Road.
The assailants fired about 20 rounds from AK47 and M-16 rifles into the outpost before retreating. No-one was hurt during the ambush.
In Panare, assailants fired grenades into the compound of Panare district office, Panare post office and a coconut plantation behind a defence volunteer outpost. There were no casualties.
