Change on Lipe: For better, or worse?
Although just a small island, Koh Lipe (pronounced lee peh) in the southwestern province of Satun is renowned for its unspoilt natural environment, featuring white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and extensive coral reefs.
The island, part of Tarutao National Marine Park, has seen an increasing number of Thai and foreign tourists, along with business operators looking to cash in on them.
Tourism has brought employment, improved infrastructure and economic growth to the island. However, it has inevitably changed the traditional way of life of local fishermen, known as Urak Lawoi.

Threatened by urbanisation, island fishermen, known as Urak Lawoi, are being squeezed out by developers and their way of life changed. These once friendly and sociable people are now afraid to socialise and talk to strangers. |
