A traffic policeman who admitted being a "bit" drunk is facing sanctions after his argument with a motorist was captured on video posted online over the weekend.
The driver recorded the verbal clash with his smartphone. The 48-second video was posted on social media by Facebook user Klong Wongjornpid Klong Wongjonpid on Sunday.
In the footage, the officer is standing next to the driver's door. The driver asks him if he was drunk, because of his mannerisms. The officer quickly responded that he was slightly intoxicated, but he was not behind the wheel. The driver then asked whether it was appropriate for an on-duty officer to be inebriated while directing traffic.
After the video went viral, national police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang said he had instructed his deputy to quickly identify the "drunk" officer.
"This is not the first time we've seen such videos," Pol Gen Somyot said.
Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri, the deputy police chief, said the officer would be punished without exception.
Traffic Police commander Apisit Muangkasem said the penalties would definitely be more severe than normal since the officer is the person who upholds the law.
