Phuket Vegetarian Festival 200th Opening Ceremony
Join me for a powerful moment as Phuket Town’s Chinese-Thai community marks the 200th anniversary of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival in the opening ceremony under dramatic rainy skies. On the square in front of the old temple, devotees dressed in white gather for the sacred ritual of raising the Go Teng pole, drums roll, firecrackers boom and incense fills the air.
This year’s ceremony took place in rain-laden weather, adding an extra layer of meaning to the purification and renewal theme of the festival.
Filmed live on location in Phuket Town, this video captures the raw intensity of the ritual parade, the lanterns, the sacred symbols and the communal energy that has kept this 9-day festival alive since its origins in the 1820s. Expect the sights of spirit-mediums, the chants of the Nine Emperor Gods, the yellow “เจ” flags marking vegetarian food stalls and the white-clad devotees as they begin their period of abstinence, self-discipline and devotion.
